It's the tie of the Vodkat Challenge League Cup Round 3 as runaway league leaders Newcastle Town come to The Riverside on Saturday and the game should be on!  Kick-off is 3pm.  Read on for a full preview.

The last time these two sides met was the first time Bernard Morley and Anthony Johnson dipped their toe into the managerial waters with Ramsbottom United.  A 5-0 humbling at the hands of the Staffordshire side and they must have wondered what they let themselves in for.

It was match number one in the 2009/2010 North West Counties season but since that August day, plenty of water has passed under the bridge and now the sides clash again in the match of the round in the Vodkat League Cup as first meets second at The Riverside on Saturday (3pm).

With no meaningful action for either side over the last month due to the horrendous weather, both will be coming into this match with significant match rustiness.  However, Rammy might just have a slight edge, having had three excellent ‘match scenario’ run-outs against higher league opposition in the last week.

The results of the games were meaningless as it was putting fitness and action into place with an eye on this very fixture against the runaway, unbeaten Vodkat League leaders.

The pitch at The Riverside is in surprisingly good condition despite the elements and, barring any return of the snow, the game should get the go ahead and the managers have called on their supporters to come out in the droves for this massive encounter.

Following Tuesday nights’ 4-0 defeat to Unibond Premier side Ashton United at the Salford Sports Village, injured co-manager Johnson declared himself satisfied enough to keep pace with the higher league opponents until their fitness finally told in the last 20 minutes, scoring twice late on.

But there was still plenty to work on and the Rams do have a handful of injuries to contend with.  Johnson is out for the rest of the season while John Robinson is serving a one-match ban for five bookings.  But Carl Lomax (groin) and Andrew Sensale (ankle) are rated as doubtful for the clash.

Jonathan Lea is also out with a hamstring strain he picked up in training but Phil Dean and John Blackley came through Tuesday’s game while Barry Shuttleworth was rested as a precaution.

New signing Ollie McGee is hopeful of making his debut, having returned from Perth in Australia, but that depends on whether he receives his international clearance from the FA and the managers are hopeful of making another signing before Saturday’s encounter.

Johnson, still on crutches, said that he and the team were very much looking forward to the game.  “We cannot wait to get back on the pitch,” he said.  “This is a massive match and, probably, is our last hope of silverware this year with Newcastle so far ahead at the top.

“It’s been a long time since we played that opening game of the season and a lot has changed.  This game will definitely show how far we have come since then and the scars from the 5-0 defeat in August have gone, now that we are sat second in the game behind them.

Having beaten Congleton Town in the last round of this competition, another side that were also unbeaten in the league at the time, hope is very high that they can stamp their mark on the game and in doing so, mark their territory ahead of the remainder of the league campaign.

“This is a huge game for us, probably one of the most important of the season,” added Johnson.  “It’s a blow that we don’t have Robbo (John Robinson) available for the game but we believe we have the side now to compete with Newcastle Town.

“Let’s try and get a big crowd down to The Riverside again as it worked well when we played New Mills to have over 200 spectators, it made a massive difference to us.”

RAMSBOTTOM UNITED SQUAD: Damien Rooney, George Bowyer, Barry Shuttleworth, Phil Dean, Andrew Dawson, Ollie McGee (subject to international clearance), John Blackley, Kieron Fletcher, Eddie O’Neill, Bernard Morley, Chris Mackay, Joel Pilkington, Lee Connell, Mark Sharples, Andrew Sensale, Carl Lomax, Barry Massey
