This was a game of missed opportunities for the Rams, seeing two valuable points float away on a chilly night at Colne, in the end settling for a 1-1 draw at the Holt House Stadium this evening.

It was a disappointing result given the amount of possession and attempts on goal that the Rams had but an inspired performance from Colne's keeper Jamie Scott kept the visitors at bay.

Rammy made one change from the match against Abbey Hey on Saturday with new signing from Atherton LR, Dominic Smalley, coming into midfield in place of the injured Carl Lomax, who now faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines with the abdominal strain which requires surgery.

The writing did seem to be on the wall for the home side in the early stages as Ramsbottom, playing up the considerable slope, forced them onto the back foot and were unfortunate not to take an early lead.

So it was a shock when the men in red took the lead on 12 minutes.  A flighted ball into the area was fumbled by keeper Tommy Allen and Colne striker Andrew Tinker fired the ball home from 25 yards.

That lead should have last less than ten seconds, however.  Straight from the kick-off, the ball found the galloping Phil Dean on the left flank but Jon Robinson couldn't convert the cross from infront of goal.

The prolific striker missed another chance of 28 minutes as the ball squeezed past the post and Bernard Morley shot over the bar as the Rams pressed for an equaliser.

In all honesty, the Rams should have been at least level at the break, if not better, but they found themselves a goal down instead.

Seven minutes into the second half and that should have been rectified.  The pacy Dean received an excellent pass from Morley and as he raced into the area was brought down and the referee had little hesitation in pointing to the spot.  Morley stepped up but Scott pulled off a fine diving save to his right to deny the co-manager.

Despite the disappointment, the Rams continued to press.  Dean, who is still hunting for his first goal for the club, tried to lob the keeper but it climbed over the bar and then Morley spurned another fantastic opportunity.

His header plunged over the bar after a silky passing move.  Robinson, Dean, Morley and Smalley were all involved before the latter fired a superb cross, Morley met it but was unable to find the target.

Wave after wave of pressure continued, especially when Rammy changed their formation by introducing Andrew Sensale to partner Robinson upfront and this made a difference.

Dean had a couple of chances saved by Scott when he could have done better before Colne's Tinker beat the offside trap but his lob over Allen was wide.

The equaliser came in controversial circumstances on 81 minutes.  From a corner in the deep corner of the ground, Andrew Dawson claimed the final touch in a melee in the six yard box when the ball crossed the line.  But Colne complained vociferously, so much so that skipper Michael Cruz was given a straight red card for abusing the officials.

More chances came in the final ten minutes but Rammy were unable to find a winner and they had to settle for the single point, which keeps them in second place in the Vodkat League table.

A disappointed Bernard Morley wasn't too disappointed with the performance.  "We played all the football out there but it has been the story of the last three weeks or so - not taking our chances.

"If Robbo had hit the target from two yards out and I had scored in the first half, we would have lead at the break and then pushed on but we were playing catch up.

"We moved the ball I felt and created so many chances but we converted just one and that was the disappointing factor.  We have a massive game on Saturday at Congleton where we will need to put those opportunities away."
