![]() A win is a win and that’s all that counts will be the way that Ramsbottom United look back on this victory over battling Squires Gate on Tuesday evening as Lee Connell’s early free-kick was all that separated the sides. It has been a mark of the way that Ramsbottom have been playing of late that they were more than happy to battle and scrap rather than produce the flamboyant play that has seen climb to the heights of second in the table. A 1-0 success is just as good as a 6-3 or a 3-2 when It comes to picking up three points. There were a number of changes to the side that were last in action against Squires Gate at home. Damien Rooney returned in goal while Jon Lea came back at right back and Mark Sharples dropped into the middle of defence. The visitors could have taken the lead as early as 15 seconds into the match when John Robinson was on the end of a long ball forward and beat the keeper but couldn’t find the target. It was the sign of a player who is desperately hunting for his goal scoring form, which has deserted him recently. He was wide again after he and Andy Sensale shared a fine passing move on 10 minutes. There was a loud appeal for the Squires Gate goalkeeper to be sent off on 14 minutes when he hauled down Sensale on the edge of the box but the stopper got away with a yellow but from the resulting free-kick, Lee Connell sent a skidding ball grubbing along the ground, wide of the wall and into the net. Rammy’s strikers were creating plenty of opportunities to further their advantage but, with confidence low, they were finding hitting the target difficult as Sensale struck wide of the upright. The home side were starting to find a foothold into the game but were being kept at bay by some resolute defending and the visitors went into half-time with their goal advantage intact. The Blackpool-based side started the second half brightly but it was the visitors who were next to come close when, from an Eddie O’Neill corner, Connell flipped the ball on and the effort was cleared off the line. And then, the Squires keeper came under the spotlight when it seemed that he kicked Robinson’s ankle, leaving him in some pain but none of the officials spotted the offence. Still feeling hard done by, he was booked and had another shot fly wide of the mark minutes later and then Connell’s crashed a free-kick over the bar and a long-range effort sail into the stands. They just kept coming at the hosts but were again unable to find the killer touch. Rooney was finally realistically tested on 78 minutes when he brilliantly tipped a shot over the bar and, despite some late opportunities, the goal scoring was complete for the evening and Ramsbottom were happy to cling onto a 1-0 win that lifts them back to third in the table. Overall, it was a game of many chances with the majority falling to the visitors but it was an even contest in terms of territory and possession and a 1-0 victory is more than satisfactory for the Rams. |
